Worship

There are a multitude of opportunities for Christian service at St. Martin of Tours. Listed below is a selection of the ministries we offer:

  • The Acolytes assist at the Eucharist on Sundays and weekdays. They may bear torches, carry the crucifix or incense, or assist the celebrant at Eucharist.
  • The Altar Guild makes the material preparations for services at the altar. Members clean and care for the sacred vessels and put these items away after Eucharist. Most of the work is done on Saturdays and Sundays. Members must be communicants in good standing.
  • The Choir sings at the 10:00 a.m. Eucharist each Sunday and major feast days. The choir rehearses on Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings.
  • The Lay Readers are licensed and serve a variety of roles. They read the scripture text, lead the Psalm responses, and offer the Prayers of the People on Sundays. They also lead the Wednesday evening prayer service.
  • Chalice Bearers administer the chalice at Eucharist. Chalice bearers are licensed by the Bishop after completion of a training conference.
  • Eucharistic Ministers are licensed to administer the sacraments to the elderly and sick who cannot attend Eucharist.
  • Element Bearers bring the gifts of bread and wine to the altar.
  • The Ushers welcome and seat people at services, hand out worship materials, take the offering.
Outreach
  • The Christian Education Committee plans educational programs for the parish throughout the year. The Rector teaches the Inquirers Class for those seeking confirmation or reception into the Episcopal Church.
  • The Well Wishers welcome newcomers and visitors following Sunday Eucharist. They write notes to visitors who have signed the guest book and provide information as requested.
  • Evangelism: We are charged, as repeated in each of the Gospels, to spread the good word. This ministry reaches out to the community both by personal contact and by effective use of contemporary media.
  • Service to our Community: St. Martin's parishioners commit themselves to community service through the Backpacks for Appalachia, Community Kitchen, Habitat for Humanity, BRIDGE, and Kids on the Block.
Behind the Scenes
  • Fellowship and Parish Life: St. Martin's offers many activities which allow us to get to know each other better, and serve to strengthen our sense of church family.
  • The Layweeders maintain the church garden. They plant, prune, rake, weed and generally care for the garden and courtyard.
  • The Office Administrator keeps this site up and running.
